Depiction:
A putto holds a trident in his left hand and is riding a dolphin.
Water from the fountain flows from the flute in the putto’s right hand and from the dolphin’s mouth into a stone trough.
History:
The dolphin is a motif frequently used in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, symbolising love and, to some extent, licentious pleasure.
The Baroque figure originally stood in the courtyard at Karlstraße 3. The original is now in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum.
In 1976, a replica of the fountain was created, which is now installed in the courtyard at Albrecht-Dürer-Straße 11.
The recast of the figure was produced by the Lenz foundry in Nuremberg, whilst the trough was created as a free-form piece.
