History:
The Altstadtfreunde Nürnberg wanted to find a fountain for the city’s oldest courtyard. An empty stone trough lying around at the Heilig-Geist-Spital was used for this purpose.

The trough originally stood in the Merkel family’s garden on Sulzbacher Straße and, following its demolition, was erected against the wall of the schoolyard at Melanchthon Grammar School.

As it was mainly being used as a seat and a rubbish bin, the City of Nuremberg had removed it from there.

The devil-like grimace was unearthed from the rubble after the Second World War and donated by the Altstadtfreunde Nürnberg.

A working replica of the fountain now stands once again at the Melanchthon Gymnasium.
